COFERMIN Rohstoffe

What this industry means to us.

Glowing steel pans, shimmering heat in high-temperature furnaces…

The refractory industry ensures that such extremes can be controlled. Without refractory materials, for example, no blast furnace, steelworks, or glass furnace would function safely and sustainably. For COFERMIN, this industry is an important pillar of our business and, historically speaking, also part of our identity. Put simply, this means that the refractory industry is both one of our most important partners and one of our most demanding customers. We grow with their challenges and appreciate their value for us as a company, but also for our economy and society.

What exactly do we do in this heat-resistant industry? In short, we connect the world of raw materials with the needs of refractory manufacturers. As a raw materials partner, we ensure that producers of refractory materials get exactly what they need, in the right quality, at the right time, and on fair terms. Sometimes we act as a traditional distributor and reliably deliver tons of high-quality minerals. Sometimes we slip into the role of an extended arm of the manufacturer and take over sales or logistics for special raw materials. And sometimes we are consultants when it comes to developing new materials or optimizing supply chains. This versatility is our answer to the demands of the refractory industry.

Our employees know what matters when a customer wants to develop a new blast furnace brick or extend the service life of a furnace lining, for example. Our expertise and practical experience make us the first point of contact for many. We are partners on equal footing; someone who listens, thinks along with you, and finds solutions. For us internally, this also means that no two days are the same! Work in this field is varied and challenging. That’s exactly what makes it so exciting. To be honest, it’s a far cry from a run-of-the-mill job.

We supply raw materials for extreme conditions

Refractory products are made from very special raw materials, and we supply almost the entire range of these. From A for aluminum oxide to Z for zirconium. Our product range covers everything required for high-temperature processes. Whether high-purity alumina for heat-resistant ceramics, sintered and fused magnesium oxide for steel mill linings, or graphite and silicon carbide for special wear resistance. We ensure that our customers have access to exactly the right materials. In addition, we offer essential additives and binders such as chromium oxide or special pitch binders, which can make all the difference in refractory industry formulations.

We don’t just send standard goods from A to B. Quality and reliability are our top priorities. All raw materials that leave our premises meet the high requirements of the industry. After all, a lot depends on their quality. For example, the safety of people in steelworks, the efficiency of cement kilns, or the service life of waste incineration plants, to name just a few examples.

Our philosophy and approach set us apart! What makes us special is our business model: we act as an independent intermediary between raw material producers and refractory manufacturers. We adhere to the principles of transparency and fairness. Our partners know where they stand. There are no hidden clauses or surprises. We focus on sustainable relationships rather than quick deals. This means that we would rather be a reliable “we’ll still be supplying you in ten years’ time” partner than the cheapest supplier today who will have disappeared from the market tomorrow.

On the other hand, there is our team and our attitude. We take raw material supply personally. Every order, whether large or small, receives our full attention. Our experts are passionate about their work and do not shy away from a challenge. A bottleneck with a rare mineral? A special request regarding specifications? We roll up our sleeves and find a solution! Pragmatic, calm, and down-to-earth. This down-to-earth approach also means that we don’t make empty promises. We prefer to convince through actions. And that’s exactly what our customers and our employees appreciate: reliable action instead of marketing buzzwords.

Just as important as what we do is what we consciously choose not to do. In the refractory industry, we deliberately refrain from activities that do not fit our role as a neutral raw materials partner. We do not engage in speculative price changes to maximize profits. For example, we do not manufacture our own refractory products because we do not want to compete with our customers. Our mission is to support them, not to compete with them. Those who work with us can be sure that we have only one thing in mind: supporting their success with the best raw materials and services.

You will also search in vain for short-term speculation in raw materials trading with us. Of course, we monitor the markets closely and respond flexibly to changes. But we do not chase quick profits if they would jeopardize the stable supply of our partners. Our focus is on reliability and sustainability.

The refractory industry is close to our hearts—and it is just one of many industries to which we are passionately dedicated. We are equally committed to the foundry industry, ceramic manufacturers, and the metallurgy and glass industries, for example. Each sector has its own challenges and raw materials, and we apply the same principle everywhere: we connect demand with supply, worldwide and reliably, especially where requirements are specific and not standard. In upcoming blog posts, we will take a look at more of these industries and show what role we play in them. So stay tuned for more insights. The journey through the world of specialty raw materials has only just begun.
