Reliability & exclusivity: Andalusite – for the decades to come!

|

COFERMIN Rohstoffe

The last few years in particular demonstrated clearly: ensuring the ability to deliver, even in the face of unexpected external influences, is important for business continuity. With its portfolio and services, Cofermin is at the very beginning of the value chain. Therefore, maintaining a flexible and resilient supply chain is of central importance to us.

A reliable supply is even more important when it comes to rare raw materials. Andalusite is a good example. As the exclusive partner of one of the world’s three suppliers, we have an important position in the market.
Andalusite is a key component in various industrial processes. From the steel to the aluminum industry, it is an important element for refractory applications. Of course, there are also alternatives such as mullite or bauxite, but these have to be refined using large amounts of energy before they can be used.
For us, reliability has several facets. Based on current consumption, our andalusite reserves will last another 45 years. Our inventories are planned in order to be able to react to market fluctuations at short notice, and robust financing models secure the business operations of our suppliers. This gives our customers the security of being reliably supplied with our raw materials even in uncertain times.

But what if something does happen?

When it comes to preventive crisis management, it is essential that we are prepared for a variety of scenarios. A concrete example of this is the well-known and planned power outages in South Africa, where the state-owned energy supplier is often unable to provide sufficient electricity. To avoid interruptions in production, investments have recently been made in diesel generators that kick in immediately as soon as the power supply fails. These generators ensure that operations can continue without disruption, even in the event of prolonged power outages.

Blackout in a big city

We are also looking to the future: an investment in photovoltaic systems is already in the planning stage. This will not only enable us to secure our energy supply, but also to operate in a more sustainable and independent manner. Our emergency plans are always designed to identify risks at an early stage and take appropriate countermeasures. With a trained team and appropriate backup systems, we are able to provide effective solutions in any crisis.

I have been Head of Sales & Marketing at Cofermin Rohstoffe for a decade. I started my career at Stinnes AG after leaving school. Today, Essen is my professional anchor point, where I develop market strategies and innovative customer solutions in the field of raw materials. I specialise in andalusite. I am particularly enthusiastic about the low CO2 footprint of this raw material! Why is that? It is a topic of the future in our industry.
