In this post, I would like to focus on a fascinating product that may not be in the industry spotlight, but plays an essential role in modern construction: silica fume. Despite its unassuming nature, silica fume is a critical component in many of our construction applications today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Silica fume, a by-product of silicon and ferrosilicon production, is created in electric arc furnaces. Interestingly, it was once considered an unwanted waste product. The history of its use paints a picture of innovation and adaptability. Originally viewed as waste, silica fume was recognized as having excellent properties as an additive, particularly for mortar and concrete.<\/p>\n

The key industries in which silica fume plays a role are diverse. It is mainly used in the construction industry, where it serves as a concrete additive. It improves the compressive strength of concrete and also its durability. These properties are particularly valuable in construction projects that require high strength and durability, such as bridges, tunnels, and high-rise buildings. Another interesting area of application for silica fume is in the manufacture of refractory materials. Here, higher-quality grades of silica fume are used to optimize the binding properties. The refractory industry benefits from the unique properties of silica fume, as it improves the performance and durability of refractory masses.<\/p>\n

The spectrum of silica fume ranges from inexpensive varieties for basic applications to high-priced grades for specialized uses. The quality varies depending on the specific surface area, particle size, color, and reactivity, which expands the range of possible applications. Silica fume can be used in tunnel construction as well as in drinking water reservoirs, with different quality standards applying in each case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

COFERMIN specializes in the secondary use of silica fume. This means that we process silica fume, which is a by-product of the manufacture of other materials, and make it reusable for various applications. A striking example of this is our project with RW Silicium in Pocking. There, we have been regenerating silica fume from a landfill site for over 20 years and successfully processing it for the respective users.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

We purchase problematic silica fume from various sources and have it processed in a special facility. The process includes, for example, cleaning, drying, and wind sifting to ensure a high-quality end product. This specialization allows us to continue supplying silica fume even in times when primary producers have to shut down production due to high energy prices.<\/p>\n

Silica fume is a very good example of how industrial waste can be reevaluated and used as a valuable resource. This process of rethinking and reusing is crucial to promoting more sustainable practices in industry.
